from gridfinity drawers to a multiboard tool wall

when stacked bins stop making sense

I was deep into Gridfinity for a while. It made sense — I had drawers available and didn’t want to commit to a permanent tool wall in the office that I might regret later. But as my tool collection grew, the drawers became multi-layered and finding anything quickly turned into a dig-through-everything situation.

The small wall in the server rack room turned out to be the perfect spot. It’s a closed space dedicated to storage, printers, and the rack — I can just close the door. It’s right next to my working area, and being a dry wall, screwing Multiboard directly into it was straightforward.

mounting the baseplates

Started by covering the wall with official Multiboard baseplates and connectors, screwing them directly into the drywall. The honeycomb pattern tiles together cleanly, with connectors locking adjacent panels. Had to work around the pre-existing vacuum adapter but the modular nature of the system made that easy.

led light border

Added an LED strip border around the entire board using a Multiboard LED frame mod. The room doesn’t have great lighting on its own, so having the LEDs illuminate the tools makes a real difference when grabbing something quickly, while looking damm cool.

tool adapters

Most tools sit on community-designed holders that snap into the Multiboard grid:

Some others were adapted from existing models — may share those later.

Everything is visible and accessible at a glance now. No more digging through stacked bins to find a caliper buried under three screwdrivers.
